Runet will depend on government

Russian lawmakers are planning to make content filtering in Runet, and to forbid DNS-servers domains. RU and .RF placing abroad and transfer Coordination Centre domains functions to the authorized federal executive authority.

"Kommersant" reports about the government's plans to increase control over the Russian Internet space citing data from federal official and Internet company managers that wished to remain anonymous.

They reported that the authorities discuss the issue of Runet federalization, that is, "the ban on joining regional and local data networks to foreign Internet networks" that can be done only through federal access.

According to experts, this will increase the level of censorship in the network. Moreover, officials also intend to transfer all DNS-servers domains. RU and. RF on Russian territory, giving Russia a great deal of independence and limiting the ability of the West to influence Russian users‘ access to the World Wide Web.

"If the proposal to transmit DNS-servers in Russia is approved, it will allow simply to isolate Russia in the case of conflict, limit access to information on the Russian Internet resources. So, it is not the curtain inside and outside, "- Andrei Kolesnikov, the director of the Coordinating Center domains. RU and.RF said.

In addition, experts say that the new rules will lead to the fact that smaller providers and foreign operators leave because they will be out of the rigid governmental hierarchy of the networks.
