Facebook's iOS app now uses the device's microphone to listen to

Facebok has recently launched a new feature that tries to identify television or music content while using the device's microphone to listen to the environment when posting a status update.

To utilize this option, the user has to click the “mood” icon when starting to create a status update and the app will start listening to identify a song, a movie or a TV show. It is possible to turn off the feature by tapping the microphone icon at the top right of the screen.

Facebook assures that none of the sound data is saved and the user is given the choice whether to add it to the post or not, but adding will only be possible if the app identifies the content. If the user decides to share the information, then his friends will be allowed to hear a 30-second preview of the song or details about a specific season or episode will be published.

OUR POINT
In our point of view, by adding this feature Facebook expands the list of potential vulnerabilities and adds new ways of surveillance. It is easy to imagine that any update in the future will turn this function on by default the user will have to remember to turn it off.

Different types of personal information have appeared on the Internet recently; and it is possible that a new one is being born now - «sound environment» of the user. The users who prefer not to be traced on the Internet now have to think about alternative secure ways of communication more and more often.

We can see that social network mobile messengers and mobile messengers, that parse the phone book, are gradually being replaced on the market by new secure multimedia messengers that do not collect private information and protect personal data.

Moreover, to be secure from potential wiretapping or their private chat being recorded, users started to pay their attention to multimedia messengers with encrypted data exchange feature.
