Bitcoin users are often the target of scams and hacking attempts. As it turns out, there are a few new scam links going around which, when visited, will download malware onto a user’s computer. Several users have reported their cryptocurrency wallets being emptied in the process.
An as yet unnamed drive-by-download malware is targeting the cryptowallets of Reddit users. Details of the attack are still unclear, but it appears attackers are using malicious links designed to appeal to those monitoring the changes in the Bitcoin prices. They disguise the bait as “price updates” which redirect victims to a website called “CryptoChartiq” when clicked.Read more
Reports that Sony Pictures has been hacked have been trickling in this morning, after a thread appeared on Reddit claiming all computers at the company were offline due to a hack. An image appeared on all employee’s computers demanding their “requests be met” along with links to leaked data.
The Reddit user that posted the thread posted a year ago that they worked at Sony Pictures. The ZIP files mentioned in the images contain a list of filenames of a number of documents pertaining to financial records along with private keys for access to servers. They said that “a single server was compromised and the attack was spread from there.”Read more
Some of the world's largest websites are planning a coordinated day of action on Thursday to oppose mass surveillance online. The Reset the Net campaign aims to encourage direct action, urging visitors to install privacy and encryption tools on the 5th of June.
The sites, which include Reddit, Imgur and BoingBoing, will be taking part in the campaign, called "Reset the Net", in a number of ways. Some will show a splash screen to all users, reminiscent of the one used in the successful protests against SOPA, the US copyright bill which many feared would damage the backbone of the internet. But rather than telling users to write to their electoral representatives, this protest will push more direct action, encouraging visitors to install privacy and encryption tools.Read more
